I want to start training for mma but I don’t know how to begin. There are alot of good gyms near by where i live but i don’t know if i should train two different martial arts at a time or just one, should i train stand up fist or ground game, or both at once?
p.s I never
trained in my life.Joey says:January 13, 2011 at 9:04 am

Train grappling/submission wrestling first, learn the stand up later. Grappling is crucial. Check out the Modern Army Combatives. They basically developed an MMA type of fighting style to replace the (comically) ineffective and outdated hand to hand b.s. they used to “teach”.
MAC is basically a combination of stand-up and on the ground grappling, and Muy Thai style striking. 3 levels teach unarmed combating, 1 is basic grappling/take-downs/ground-fighting, 2 is more advanced of the same, in level 3 you start learning strikes. Something to look in to.
Learn wrestling/submissions first, then train for striking. If you’ve never done anything like this before, start now. It takes years to train to the point where you’re any good against real competition (not just joe public), start asap!
Edit: Sorry, but even the best strikers in the world get taken to the ground and submitted or ground and pounded. No matter how good you are at stand up, there are grapplers that will take you down. You need to know how to wrestle, period.

find a decent mma training center and start training. Most people already have a base once starting whether it be wrestling, boxing, kickboxing, or other forms of martial arts. But if you find the right gym that focuses on mixed martial arts, and that actually has fighters, and credible instructors you’ll learn boxing, muay thai, wrestling, and jiu jitsu. Which has been proven to be a very effective combination not only for MMA competition but for street fighting, as well.

if you ain’t sporty you are going to get the biggest wake up of your life.
MMA requires alot of physical exercises and cardio to make you be able to take and give a punch whilst not staying out of breath.
there are MMA training centres around to deal with the new MMA craze.
they will teach you stand up fighting
ground fighting
and submissive fighting (partially ground)
i’d seriously reccomend you do a traditional class rather then this as this new MMA fad will lead to alot of people going in to bad instructors.
just because you are trained in an all round fighting system doesn’t make you a better fighter it just makes you more capable of being in every situation
but if you are good enough in one style you should be able to avoid fighting on the ground if its your weakness.
also it will take minimum of a year to get into the rhythm of using your skills to the proper extent. there is no crash course in teaching your body how to react under pressure and how to do X when he does Y.
best of luck in your choice just be humble, patient, respectful and loyal you will go a mile
the first step and the biggest is the mental aspect
